Writing for a Purpose

The writing samples displayed this week are all extensions of our study of the Story Abuela by Arthur Doros and Elisa Kleven. The students were asked to write about an adventure they had using the vocabulary words from Abuela. The story takes place in New York City and depicts aerial views (drawings) of different parts of the city, including Lady Liberty. The boys and girls expressed great interest in learning more about the statue, so we collected information from Internet sources as well as the Betsy Ross Library. The students generated a list of facts and used them to compose expository paragraphs. As you can see, they did a fine job--both with the writing and illustrations!
