Social Studies

We read the book Sarah Morton's Day by Kate Waters/photos by Russ Kendall. The book depicts a day in the life of a pilgrim girl, Sarah Morton. She was an actual person, and the book is based upon records and diaries of the day. We learned many interesting facts about day-to-day life in Plimouth Plantation:

  1. There were no forks.
  2. The children had to stand at the table when they ate.
  3. The children could only speak when spoken to.
  4. The beds were rolled up and put away in the daytime.
  5. The children had many chores.
  6. They did not attend school.
  7. Many women and girls did not know how to read.
  8. They had to rely upon their imaginations and simple toys/games for entertainment.
  9. The cabins were hot and fly-ridden in the summertime and cold and dark in the winter.

The second graders were most fascinated by the fact that pilgrim children only took baths about once a month! The pilgrims' undergarments were washed occasionally, but the outer layers of clothing were only brushed clean. (This explains the references to "dirty clothes" in their paragraphs!)

*************************************************************************************

Note: During the past weeks we've been discussing (in class) all we have to be grateful for. As you know, the boys and girls are very grateful for their parents, homes, food, shelter and friends. As their teacher, I am very grateful to have such a wonderful class. I wish the boys and girls and their families a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

-Ms. Prine

Don't be a turkey...READ!!!

Keep up the nice work!

Great Job!!!

The students have been keeping track of books read (in the month of November) with "feathers". When a child reads a book s/he can write the title and author on a feather and add it to his or her turkey. The turkey with the the biggest tail wins! Actually, they're all winners because they're all readers. Their teacher is very proud of them!

.

We Give Thanks...

The second graders celebrated Thanksgiving with Mrs. Perry's fifth graders today! The older students read a Thanksgiving story to their reading buddies. Then, Ms. Prine's pupils shared a favorite book with their older pals. Finally, all enjoyed a delicious snack of cheese popcorn and punch. Even our class mascot had a great time!!! We really do have much to be thankful for...

American Education Day at Betsy Ross

Mark your calendars for Friday, 11/19/04--American Education Day! Parents are invited to visit classrooms from 9-11 A. M. and 1-2:30 P.M.

Art Education at Betsy Ross

Educators, philosophers, and artists have coined the phrase "the fourth R" (in addition to Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic) when discussing the importance of art education for young children. Art education develops many important skills: Problem solving, communication, and cooperation to name a few. The boys and girls will tell you it gives them a chance to express themselves, explore different media, be creative, and have fun--though probably not in those exact words!

The second graders look forward to art class with Mrs. Girardi on Monday afternoons. This past quarter the students have participated in a variety of activities, including creating the giant chalk drawings you see featured here.

Writing for a Purpose

The writing samples displayed this week are all extensions of our study of the Story Abuela by Arthur Doros and Elisa Kleven. The students were asked to write about an adventure they had using the vocabulary words from Abuela. The story takes place in New York City and depicts aerial views (drawings) of different parts of the city, including Lady Liberty. The boys and girls expressed great interest in learning more about the statue, so we collected information from Internet sources as well as the Betsy Ross Library. The students generated a list of facts and used them to compose expository paragraphs. As you can see, they did a fine job--both with the writing and illustrations!
